The first phase of the Mission is covering Oshiobugie-Auchi; Igbei Quarters and Fugar-Agenebode Road sites. It is aimed at ascertaining the state of the completed projects with regard to maintenance and ownership by benefiting communities; meeting with relevant stakeholders in the new sites where work is about to begin; inspecting the level of implementation in the sites where work is on-going; inspecting the locations of the CIGs, as well as interacting with their members on the impact of their operations.

Speaking during courtesy visits to the Chairman of Etsako East Local Government, Hon. Dr. Obaseki expressed delight over the award of the contract for civil works after the initial process of studies, designs and clearance by the World Bank, stressing that the recurring gully on the highway had threatened the lives of the people of the two Local Government Areas and other road users.

The Project Coordinator informed his hosts that following the on-going dualization of the affected highway, the SPMU would interact with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing in order to harmonize designs and to have maximum value for money in the implementation process.

He disclosed that  NEWMAP was employing a modern and sustainable approach to flood and gully erosion management, adding that the people need to understand the causes of the twin problem and how it can be prevented.

Dr. Obaseki requested the LG Chairmen to partner with NEWMAP, especially in the area of coming up with detailed profile of the menace of flood and gully erosion in their respective areas.

He solicited the cooperation of the LG executives and their people in the smooth implementation of the project.

Responding, the Chairman of Etsako East Local Government, Mrs. Benedicta Ebuehi expressed gratitude to Governor Godwin Obaseki for capturing the LGA in his development agenda, pointing out that it was indicative of his concern for the people of the LGA.

She told the visiting NEWMAP team that her LG was in the process of creating awareness and carrying out sensitization on the prevention of flooding and requested the State Government to intervene in the Agenebode-Okpella Road being ravaged by flood and gully erosion.

On his part, the Chairman of Etsako Central Local Government, Comrade John Akhigbe thanked NEWMAP for the visit and asserted that the best way to tackle erosion problem is through a holistic approach.

He expressed appreciation for the intervention efforts and assured of adequate security for the contractors and all who would be part of the project.
